provision of a wide range of education and learning opportunities’
Mission: ‘To build a legacy that inspires prisoners to fully integrate into the
community, reducing the likelihood of re-offending, whilst building capacity
andensuring accountability for its own operations’
Creative Learning in Prison (CLIP) was established in April 2013 and works closely with the Learning and Development team at Guernsey Prison and seeks to provide activities that go beyond the Prison’s core numeracy and literacy curriculum. To support its initial strategy, four pillars of activity were identified being Art & Design, Drama, Photography and Publishing. This has now been extended to provide education and learning activities which contribute to the HM Inspectorate of Prisons ‘Healthy Prison’ targets.
By way of example, courses offered by CLIP include yoga, cookery, photography, music and drama workshops and the production of the prison magazine ‘Bang Up’.
CLIP also benefits from income generated through prisoner activities in the Prison carpentry workshop, both through sales to the general public and local community projects, including those on behalf of schools, churches and parish douzaines.
Funds raised by CLIP are forecasted to grow with the opening of the new Prison workshop, which was majority funded by CLIP with funds raised through partner charities, corporate and individual sponsorship and fundraising events. This will go a long way towards one of CLIP’s strategic goals of becoming a self-sustaining charity.
