Description Aims and Objectives

To provide financial assistance via a grant for local families to assist with palliative and funeral expenses of children within the Bailiwick of Guernsey.

Ernie’s Angels was founded in December of 2017 in memory of Ernie who died in September of that year. He had received much support from local people during a long illness and eventual terminal diagnosis and a group of his family and friends thought that we could harness that support to continue to help local children. It became apparent to us through our experiences with Ernie that there was no hospice care for children on the island. Ernie made it very clear that he had had enough of hospitals and wanted to die at home but this is a hugely difficult undertaking for some families with practical, emotional and financial aspects that need consideration. We were lucky that we could make Ernie as comfortable as possible at home but could see that there could be significant issues for future families. We felt that the best way we could support these families was to offer financial assistance towards palliative care costs thus helping to alleviate a huge burden for them at an already extremely stressful time. Equally our own experience of the practical costs of funerals and burials made us aware that this was, also, an area in which we could financially ease difficulties for families.
We have been in operation for over a year now and, in that time, have been able to help two local families as well as cover travel costs for two paediatric nurses from Frossard ward to attend a palliative care study day in the UK. We feel that their expertise will be of absolutely vital importance for local families who may need this in the future.Ernie’s Angels launched with the cheese project supported fantastically by the Guernsey Dairy, who donated the profits from a limited edition run of Ernie’s favourite cheese. This was a very successful first fund raiser for us as it took us into people’s homes and raised our public profile much more quickly than we could have managed on our own. We have been extremely well supported in our first year of raising funds and continue to push ahead with raising more awareness of the difficulties faced by families here in Guernsey who are facing losing their child whether through long term illness or unexpected accident or illness. We cannot lessen their pain but our charity’s ethos remains that we support them and show them that their community cares. Your support enables us to be there at the darkest time in any parent’s life and we understand that we can’t change the circumstances but we hope to, at least, lighten the financial burden that these heart breaking circumstances bring.
