Guernsey Language Commission LBG

Our aims and objectives

The Guernsey Language Commission came into being by resolution of the States of Guernsey in August 2020, and became registered as a Guernsey charity in January 2023. The Commission is a Guernsey company limited by guarantee.

The Commission aims to halt and reverse the decline in numbers of fluent speakers of Guernesias, and to sustain, develop and promote Guernesias as a unique aspect of the island's culture, heritage and identity.

Organisation and management

Oversight and strategic objectives set by Board of Commissioners, of which there are currently eight. Supported in delivery of specific projects by volunteers and working closely with other culture and heritage organisations, off-island academics and international minority language focus groups. Activities include general promotion and raising awareness of the Guernesias language, attendance at cultural and heritage events, development of teaching aids for use in education, support to organisations wishing to adopt the language, and cataloguing and archiving multi-media Guernesias resources.
