The programme will start at 13.15 and includes: 13.25-14.10 Keynote Speech: Paula Harriott, Head of Prisoner Engagement, Prisoners Reform Trust 14.10-14.40 Panel Session: Local Representatives talking about their experience of engaging with lived experience. 14.50-16.05 Interactive Workshop: facilitated session focused on putting the principles into practice when engaging with lived experience including hint and tips which you can take back to your own charity. First Dog First Aid Course of 2022 at the GSPCA 11th May & more dates set

On Wednesday 11th May the GSPCA will hold their first Dog First Aid Course of 2022. Taking the course will be GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne who has over 25 years working in the field of animal rescue and with over 3000 animals through the doors every year at the GSPCA the team see cases of animal first aid on a daily basis here in Guernsey. Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “We recently held a Cat First Aid Course and next month we will hold our the first Dog First Aid Course of 2022.” “We have set extra dates for November for another dog and cat course and the next Dog First Aid Course is planned for the 11th May.” “Those attending will learn to save dogs and other animals lives and although we hope those attending never have to use the skills but at least they will have the knowledge of what to do.” “We have been running dog and cat first aid courses for over seven years and have trained over 300 participants to help save animals lives.” "We have ‘Casper’ who is our model first aid dog a bit like the Annie doll many may know for humans and he is a great way to show and learn how to carry out CPR on an unconscious dog although with covid precautions will be used as a model more than for practical." “From dealing with a dog chocking to heat stroke we cover a huge range of topics and life saving techniques that could really help save a dogs life.” “We always hope that the skills learned will not be needed but we have been told of circumstances of these skills helping in real life situations.” "As owners of pets our worst fear is not knowing what to do if our four legged friend has an injury and this training helps pet owners learn and understand ways to help save your pets life." “It is £25 per person and you can book online or call 257261.” The dates for the first aid courses are: Dog First Aid 6.30pm - 8.45pm Wednesday 11th May 2022 - Ref - Dog 11/05 Dog First Aid 6.30pm - 8.45pm Wednesday 9th November 2022 - Ref - Dog 9/11 Cat First Aid 6.30pm - 8.45pm Wednesday 30th November 2022 - Ref - Cat 30/11 More dates will be announced for 2023. All first aid courses are a minimum £25 donation and you must book your place by 5pm before the course. Within the sessions you get the chance to learn about what to do if you were faced with an emergency situation with your dog or cat. First GSPCA Volunteer Induction evening since February 2020 and Volunteering age now from 16 years and up

After more than 2 years the GSPCA has the first Volunteer Induction Evening planned on Thursday 26th May at the GSPCA in St Andrews starting at 630pm. The volunteer age from this induction will be from 16 years and up and we have opportunities in all parts of our activities here at the GSPCA. The evening will start with introductions followed by an induction into our work, the opportunities and cover all aspects of health and safety to enable the new volunteers to understand the operations and what we do at the GSPCA. Each new volunteer will be asked to complete the following form on r before attending and Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager will then chat to each attendee about the next steps. We are currently looking for volunteers 16 years and over and here are some of the roles – Dog Walking - to see the task role please visit Cat Socialising - to see the task role please visit Animal Accommodation Cleaner - With over 300 animals in our care there is lots of cleaning to do in the morning and through the day. Please complete a form and return it to the Shelter if you would like to help care for the animals at the Shelter. Wildlife Volunteer - Our wildlife unit always has high numbers of birds and a growing number of hedgehogs that require caring for. We need volunteers to help us with this unit and if you would like to help please complete a form below and return it to the Shelter. The main part of this role is between 8am and 12pm 7 days a week and we are trying to put a rota together to help assist the wildlife staff. Reception and helping answer calls - We are looking to build a team of volunteers to assist the reception staff in their duties to help respond to the inquiries and welfare calls. Administration - We are a very busy Animal Welfare organisation and if you could help in the office please fill in the form below and get in touch. Gardening & Grounds Work - We have a lovely rural site that we always need help to care for. Maintenance & Painting - Many of our buildings have been standing for some time and need TLC. Fostering / Hand Rearing - The main animals we hand rear at the GSPCA are young birds and hoglets. We do on occasions look for foster homes for pet animals and please follow this link to see our Fostering page Fund Raising - we are always looking for volunteers to help with our many fund raising events.
