Description Aims and Objectives

Wigwam Support Group LBG is a local charity, founded by parents, to offer friendship, support and advice to families who have a child or young person with a disability.

We operate a three tiered approach to supporting families. For those in need of direct support our Family Support Worker can provide 1:1 targeted support working towards agreed goals with the family. Other families benefit from attending our family events which provide an opportunity for children/young people with a disability and their siblings to have fun and socialise while their parents meet other families to form friendships and gain peer support in an environment of acceptance and understanding. Finally some dip in and out our activities as suits their needs and simply contact us when they need support or advice.

We strive to raise public awareness of disability issues to improve understanding and acceptance. We aim to empower families by being a voice for them and by signposting families to the information and advice they need. We listen to parents and work in partnership with service providers and other charities and organisations to enhance services and improve the lives of families.

Organisation and Management

Wigwam is run by a committee of seven, this includes the two founders.

Wigwam employs two members of staff. The part time (25 hours p/week) Operations Manager manages the day to day running of the organisation including communications, systems and developing relationships with internal and external stakeholders such as funders. The part time (25 hours p/week) Family Support Worker works directly with families in need in 1:1 settings as well as liaising closely with other agencies and running a monthly drop in session for families.
