Eleanor Foundation (The)

Our aims and objectives

The Eleanor Foundation (EF) was created in 2012 following the death of Eleanor Carey who was killed in a collision whilst cycling in London in December 2011. She was studying International Development and was committed to becoming a development professional with a specific interest in water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH).

EF is active in north west Tanzania in Chato District, Geita Region and Biharamulo District, Kagera Region. These two districts are approximately 10,500 square kms in area with a combined population of 1.04 million (2022 census). Principally, EF works in partnership with local communities and the two District Governments to improve access to improved water sources, to construct toilets at both primary and secondary schools and to promote better hygiene largely through handwashing initiatives. EF has also been involved in the construction of new health facilities in remote rural locations.

Additionally, EF collects unwanted bicycles in Guernsey for shipment via the UK based organisation, Re-Cycle, for distribution to partners in a number of countries in Africa. In Africa, bicycles change lives.

Organisation and management

Eleanor Foundation is a company limited by guarantee and is controlled and managed by a Board of seven Directors. The directors are responsible for grant applications and general fund raising activities including bike rides, music events, and social evenings. All projects and activities in Tanzania are considered and authorised by the directors. Eleanor Foundation in Guernsey is run entirely by volunteers meaning that all funds raised are applied towards delivering projects in Tanzania.

In 2016, Eleanor Foundation Tanzania Ltd (EFT) was established as an NGO in Tanzania with a small office based in Biharamulo with three staff headed by Project Manager, Godfrey Gahanga. All projects approved by EF in Guernsey are managed and implemented by EFT.
