National Trust of Guernsey

Our aims and objectives

The National Trust of Guernsey is an independent, non-political charity dedicated to preserving the Island’s natural, built and cultural heritage for the benefit of present and future generations.

Founded in 1960, the Trust works to protect and care for places of historic interest and natural beauty across Guernsey. This includes the conservation of landscapes, coastlines, historic buildings and artefacts, as well as the safeguarding of traditional skills and local heritage.

The Trust’s objectives are to:

  •  Protect and enhance Guernsey’s countryside and coastline
  •  Preserve historic buildings and sites of cultural significance
  •  Collect, conserve and interpret artefacts connected with the Island’s history
  •  Promote public access, enjoyment and understanding of Guernsey’s heritage
  •  Support education and community engagement in heritage and conservation

Through its properties, including the Folk & Costume Museum, The Victorian Shop at 26 Cornet Street, Les Câches Farm, The Fermain Tower, historic sites and landscapes, the Trust provides opportunities for residents and visitors alike to explore and appreciate Guernsey’s rich and distinctive heritage.

As a self-funded organisation, the Trust relies on the support of its Members, volunteers, donors and the wider community to continue its vital work.

Organisation and management

The National Trust of Guernsey is governed by a voluntary Council acting as the Board of Trustees. The Council is responsible for the overall governance, strategic direction and financial stewardship of the organisation, ensuring that all activities are carried out in furtherance of its charitable objectives.

Trustees are appointed for their relevant skills and experience and serve in a voluntary capacity. The Council meets regularly to oversee policy, risk management, regulatory compliance and long-term planning.

Day-to-day management is delegated to a small team of staff, supported by volunteers, who are responsible for operational delivery across the Trust’s activities, including property management, conservation, public engagement and commercial operations. The Council maintains appropriate oversight of these functions through regular reporting and defined lines of accountability.

The organisation is financed through donations, Member subscriptions, income generated by the Folk & Costume Museum, the Victorian Shop & Parlour at 26 Cornet Street, and annual fundraising events. As an independent, self-funded charity, it is committed to maintaining high standards of governance, transparency and prudent financial management.
