Volunteer Fixers for our Repair Cafe

Do you enjoy fixing things? We are looking for volunteer fixers to help users repair their items at our Repair Cafes. The Repair Cafe is run by the Clean Earth Trust, a Guernsey based charity with a vision to limit negative human impact on the environment. The Repair Cafe aims to provide a friendly and sociable place for anyone in Guernsey to bring items that need repair, and either work with a volunteer fixer to repair their item, or to get further information about who or how they can get an item repaired. We aim to reduce the quantity of ‘stuff’ that needlessly ends up in landfill, and promote and encourage a mending culture through skill sharing and promotion of the values and activities of the Repair Cafe across the Bailiwick. How it works Users bring their item(s) to the Repair Cafe and are matched with a volunteer with relevant skills who will try to help fix their item. Users can choose how involved they want to be in the repair; they may want to try part of the repair themselves, or prefer to just watch, but users always remain with their item. Volunteers explain to the user what they are doing and ensure that there is a good understanding about any risks involved in the repair. If the volunteer is unable to help, then we would try to give an alternative path to repair eg. referral to a professional business, online videos or manuals. Overview of role We are looking for volunteer fixers who are keen and able to investigate and repair any of the following sorts of items: Small appliances and gadgets eg. Toasters, kettles, watches, lamps Wooden items eg. Picture frames, wooden toys, small items of furniture Computer equipment eg. Computers, printers, laptops Audio and visual equipment eg. Radios, phones, TVs, DVD players Jewellery eg clasp or link repairs Porcelain and pottery eg Cracks and breaks in plates and vases Mobile phones and tablet devices eg. Cracked screens, battery replacements Clothing and textiles eg. Fixing zips, minor alterations, toy and soft furnishing repairs We are looking for volunteers who can commit to attending a minimum of one Repair Café session per month, with each session lasting 2-4 hours. Experience and skills required Experienced and comfortable fixing items, curious and persistent in finding faults and getting to the bottom of a problem ! Personable, friendly and feel comfortable talking to users. Ability to clearly communicate with users and explain what they are doing as they repair an item. Abilty to show users how to do a repair, if the user wants to learn. Ability to explain how the Repair Cafe works. It would be deirable for fixers to bring their own tools, but this isn’t essential and we can always ask our wonderful community to donate unwanted tools to support the Repair Cafe activities. Charity Secretary

We are seeking a Charity Secretary who has a strong interest in environmental conservation and protection. We are looking for someone who is self-driven, practical and can donate 1-2 hours of their time per week. Whilst the role is general in its duties, there is the potential scope of a broader administrative role as the charity becomes more established. Duties and responsibilities will include: - Organise the practical arrangements of the quarterly board meeting - Develop the agenda with the Chair and Project Leads - Ensure that the agenda and other papers are circulated to all members - Ensure meetings are properly convened, constituted and quorate - Confirm decisions, draft and circulate minutes - Monitor the implementation of trustees' decisions - Write letters and manage charity correspondence - Keep stock of informative literature (policy statements, etc) - Manage charity registrations and profile information - Ad-hoc administrative duties as they arise There are no specific qualifications required for this role, but we are looking for people who demonstrate the following qualities: - Have a passion for protecting and conserving our environment - Personable, friendly and respectful - Great written and verbal communication skills - Self-motivated with a strong work ethic Previous experience in a secretarial role, especially within a charity, would be beneficial but not crucial. Repair Cafe at Styx Monthly Market

We are running a Repair Cafe at the Styx Monthly Market on Sunday December 6th 1-4pm in the Yew Room. The Repair Cafe aims to provide a friendly and sociable environment that promotes a mending culture and passes on repairing skills. Bring along your items, and we'll work with you to try to fix them. We will have volunteers on hand to help repair: - Textiles, clothes, toys - Leather goods - Small household items and electrical equipment Have a free cup of tea or coffee while you wait, with some delicious cakes for sale. We would also love to receive any donations of good quality fabrics, buttons and other sewing/textiles equipment.
