Volunteer Induction Evening
Guernsey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (GSPCA)

We are always looking for volunteers to help at the Shelter in a variety of roles. You need to be at least 13 years old to help at the Shelter. If you are younger then you could still help. If you talk to your parents or guardians they may help you with fund raising for the Animal Shelter. To get started in Volunteering at the GSPCA we hold Induction Evenings and no matter your age there is always a way you can help. If you are looking to complete your work experience, Duke of Edinburgh or similar placement it is a requirement to attend one of the sessions to arrange a start date and complete the induction. The Volunteer Induction Evenings planned for 2017 will take place on the following days and times in the Event and Training Room at the GSPCA, but please do call 257261 closer to the date to confirm it is taking place. When you arrive to attend please follow the paw prints at the front of reception which will take you to the upper floor where the sessions are held. Cat First Aid Course

Every year we hear of pet owners being faced with circumstances of their pets being injured or caused harm often through no fault but an accident. To help pet owners each year we hold a series of training courses and we have set dates for first aid courses for those interested in helping dogs and cats. The dates set for 2017 are: Cat First Aid 6.30pm - 8.45pm Wednesday 10th May 2017 - Ref - Cat 10/05 Dog First Aid 6.30pm - 8.45pm Thursday 18th May 2017 - Ref - Dog 18/05 Dog First Aid 6.30pm - 8.45pm Wednesday 22nd November 2017 - Ref - Dog 22/11 All first aid courses are a minimum £20 donation and you must book your place by the lunch time on the day of the training session. Within the sessions you get the chance to learn about what to do if you were faced with an emergency situation with your dog or cat. All participants receive handouts, a few goodies and a certificate. DEMENTIA AWARENESS WEEK 14 - 20 May 2016

Dementia Awareness Week is Alzheimer's Society's annual flagship awareness raising campaign. The main aim of the week is to increase understanding of dementia and let people who are worried about dementia know that there is information and support available to them. This year's theme is United Against Dementia. It's time to forget our differences and come together to urgently find a cure, improve care, and offer help and understanding. Why not become a Dementia Friend during this Dementia Awareness Week by attending one of Dementia Friendly Guernsey's free Dementia Awareness Sessions? Find out a little more about dementia and how it affects people in our community. Each session lasts just one hour. They are being held on Monday 15th May at 7.30pm at Styx, St Pierre du Bois Wednesday 17th May at 3pm at Styx, St Pierre du Bois, Thursday 18th May at 2.30pm at the MIND Centre, The Arsenal, St Peter Port and on Friday 19th May at 10.30am at Styx, St Pierre du Bois. During the week from Monday 15th - Friday 19th May Dementia Friendly Guernsey (the island's new local Dementia Action Alliance) made up of organisations working together to improve the lives of people affected by dementia will be on the Street Bus outside the Food Hall, St Pierre du Bois from 9.30am till 5pm to provide information and offer support.

The GSPCA shop will be closing down on Thursday this week for a few weeks while we have a refit. In order to clear some stock we will be having a massive sale over the next two days. The shop will be manned 9am – 5pm and bargains include: * all adult clothing £1 per item * children’s clothing 50p per item * all furniture in stock maximum £10 per item but must be collected before Thursday * handbags and shoes £1 each * small ornaments 50p and large £1 * children’s toys no more than £1 * books 25p each * CDs 25p each * DVDs 50p each * jewellery £1 or less We want to clear as much as possible over the next two days to make the move easier so come down and get a bargain. To get to us by bus take the number 21 or number 61. We are either the first left turn after the Castel Church traffic lights or the last right turn before the Castel Church traffic lights depending on your direction. The turning is sign posted in blue GSPCA animal shelter and we are just 5 minutes walk from the nearest bus stop. Come and grab a bargain and help us to clear the shop. Animal Welfare Seafront Sunday 28th May - how to get involved with biggest celebration of animals in Guernsey

The 2017 Animal Welfare Seafront Sunday will be the sixth and takes place on Sunday 28th May. On the 28th May 2017 10am to 4pm the GSPCA will be organising a day to celebrate the animals in Guernsey and all the wonderful work that is done to care for them. We are extremely grateful to all those that made last 5 years such great days and we are hoping this years will be bigger and better. There will be stalls and fun for all the family - all with an animal theme. Fancy dress to mascot 5-a-side football, childrens games to lots of food, a fun dog show to an animal less animal show, arts and crafts to charity stalls, some of the GSPCA animals looking for homes, entertainment and so much more........ This years Giant Animal Mascot event is a 5-a-side football match and can be entered as an individual or enter in the team event. All proceeds for this years race will help animals in Guernsey at the GSPCA so you can help support a great local charity, whilst having a lot of fun. Chose your Giant Animal Mascot Suit on the day or bring your own, details and sign up below...... There are lots of people that we would like to thank for their help and support to make this an amazing day out for all the family and listed below are just a few of them. Show Us Your Pets (picture display of your animals) Not got a dog you can bring down, but own a pet then this is your chance to take part in showing them off without the need to bring them along. We are asking pet owners to take pictures of their pets and bring them along or send them in of your cat, rabbit, horse, donkey, stick insect, tortoise, whatever it may be into a virtual pet display. It all takes place on 28th May as part of our Animal Welfare Seafront Sunday. Once again we will be holding a Giant Animal Mascot event to entertain the crowds at our Animal Welfare Seafront Sunday. This is open to mascots and individuals prepared to dress as an animal and play a fun football game with a rather over sized ball. We are asking businesses, pubs, individuals or anyone as a team of 5 or an individual and we can make extra teams on the day. Don't worry about what to wear we will provide the Giant Animal Mascot suit and have over 70 available. To join our giant animal 5-a-side football game in Guernsey we are asking you to raise funds for the Shelter, ideally a minimum of £15 per person or £70 a team. Rock to Rocque Cycle Ride
Friends of Les Bourgs Hospice

This family event is in its 24th year this year and is starting at 0845 at the top of the Val des Terres, 0945 at Rocquaine, 1045 at Grand Rocques and everyone is due to finish at North Beach where there will be catering available and will be handing out medals and certificates. This event is suitable for all the family, with small children being able to start at the Salarie Corner if that is all they can manage. During the school breaks we run a series of guided tours at the GSPCA and we have now planned for 2017 with some special tours for the children. You can also book a tour for a special event or birthday. For details on special tours please see below. This is your opportunity to visit behind the scenes at our Animal Shelter in St Andrews and see the work being carried out for the new build. We are arranging the guided tours on a series of dates at 2pm with the next this May half term. We ask for a minimum donation of £6 per person and £4 per child, or £17 for a family of four or £16 with an Islands Mum card. In 2017 we have some themed tours which are £18 per child or £16 with an Islands Mums card. The tours take around 80 minutes and you get to see in many of the departments, interact with some of the friendly residents and a variety of species. The special tours are a little longer. Tours are a maximum of 20 people per tour, so please book early. The special tours are also a maximum of 20. Some of the animals you will have the chance to see will be cats, rabbits, birds, hedgehogs, dogs looking for homes and some of the other wildlife. After an amazing Animal Welfare Seafront Sunday last week we are back on the Crown Pier this weekend. From 10am until 4pm the sea front will be packed with stalls and things to do with an arts theme. As its Summer please sport your best summer out fit and sun glasses for a fun evening as a way of thanks for all of the hard work carried out 24/7 from the Animal Welfare Seafront Sunday to the around the clock animal care, the conservation work to those that are helping lay the floor in the charity shop. With 20 staff and over 750 volunteers we hope you can join us to celebrate all of the hard work each of you carry out through the year. Cake sale with St Martins Primary School Children and come see our GSPCA Charity Shop this Thursday 1.30-230pm After a massive tidy and new floor in our on-site charity shop we have re-opened the doors and to celebrate this Thursday St Martins Primary School students during their Epic Week will be selling cakes along with drinks this between 130pm and 230pm. The children from St Martins Primary School enjoyed a tour yesterday, will be helping read to the animals and clean some cages today, helping with our conservation work tomorrow and finish their week on Thursday at the Shelter selling cakes to raise funds for the animals in our care. So please do pop in on Thursday 15th June 130pm to 230pm. Our Charity Shop is having its finishing touches over the next two days but the doors are re-open 9am to 5pm Monday to Thursday and 11am to 4pm on Sundays. The shop is now manned and although we currently aren't able to accept donations of goods for the shop as we are still busy getting it ready and are open for customers. Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said "Our on-site Charity Shop has had a new floor fitted thanks to work from the Work to Benefit team and also Mondomundi Fairtrade and is looking great." "From this week we will have team members manning the shop where we now have a phone and can take payment." Is Monday the 3rd July in your diary? Once again the GSPCA are looking forward joining the National Trust at Le Viaër Marchi on Monday 3rd July. We will be setting up from 4pm for a 5pm start and if you can help volunteer please do get in touch. Held on the first Monday of July (in any year), Le Viaër Marchi is a colourful and widely anticipated annual event in Guernsey’s calendar and continues to be the Guernsey National Trust’s greatest fundraiser. The event held, at Saumarez Park, attracts a huge gathering of locals and visitors. It focuses around a central cluster of stalls selling traditional homemade produce including beanjar, Guernsey biscuits and gâche. Local cider, ice-cream and honey are also best sellers. The list of stallholders grows from year to year and a delightful variety of island produce is plentiful. This is the third year the GSPCA have joined the National Trust for this great event and we are very much looking forward to it. Held on the first Monday of July (in any year), at Saumarez Park, Le Viaër Marchi is a colourful and widely anticipated annual event in Guernsey’s calendar and continues to be the Trust’s greatest fundraiser. Setting up and taking down the event requires muscle power and we would welcome able-bodied teams to help, always on the Sunday before the event, the Monday day of the event and again for the after-party clear up on the Tuesday morning. Join the GSPCA at the South Show & their Fun Dog Show Saturday 12th August

Come and join the South ‘Fun Dog Show’ 2017 at the South Show at St Martins Community Centre Field on Saturday 12th August. The Show opens at 10.00 and to register they are asking you arrive before 2.50pm for a 3.00pm start. Just £1.00 entry fee per dog and you can enter as many classes as you are eligible for. All Dogs must be fully vaccinated and kept on a lead at all times. All Island dogs are welcome. Compered & judged by Steve Byrne of the GSPCA and supported by Creature Comforts. The classes include - Best Puppy – 12 weeks to 1 year Best Golden Oldie – over 7 years Best Rescue Prettiest Bitch Most Handsome Dog Waggiest Tail Bad Hair Day or Shiniest Coat Fancy Dress or Dog Most Like Owner Rosettes and prizes awarded for all 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in each class Winners from each class will be entered into a ‘Best in Show’ Class to win the ‘FOREST STORES CUP’ The South Show is over two days and the GSPCA will be there both on the Friday and Saturday with our stall with lots of games and things to buy and we hope you can join us there. We are hugely grateful to the South Show for the kind invite to be involved once again with the wonderful annual fun dog show they hold each year which is great fun and always full of wonderful pets. Dog First Aid Course

Every year we hear of pet owners being faced with circumstances of their pets being injured or caused harm often through no fault but an accident. To help pet owners each year we hold a series of training courses and we have set dates for first aid courses for those interested in helping dogs and cats. The dates set for 2017 are: Cat First Aid 6.30pm - 8.45pm Wednesday 10th May 2017 - Ref - Cat 10/05 Dog First Aid 6.30pm - 8.45pm Thursday 18th May 2017 - Ref - Dog 18/05 Dog First Aid 6.30pm - 8.45pm Wednesday 22nd November 2017 - Ref - Dog 22/11 All first aid courses are a minimum £20 donation and you must book your place by the lunch time on the day of the training session. Within the sessions you get the chance to learn about what to do if you were faced with an emergency situation with your dog or cat. All participants receive handouts, a few goodies and a certificate. Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said "The dog and cat first aid courses are designed to help those wanting to learn how to perform life saving first aid to their pets or animals they may come across." "We cover all aspects of first aid for pets from CPR to seizures and all for just £20 which goes towards helping the many animals in our care at the GSPCA." Lights of Love

Guernsey Sands is holding its annual Lights of Love service on Friday 1 December from 7.30pm. Location to be confirmed but please save the date. This Christmas service is for all who have been deeply touched by the death of a child, at any age or stage of the child’s life and is an opportunity to honour the loved ones no longer with us, before we celebrate Christmas. This candlelit service by Reverend Linda Le Vasseur includes Christmas carols, readings, musical entertainment, candle lighting and tag hanging in honour of your loved lost one and a few mementos of the evening followed by a light refreshment.
